Is it odd that I want a hard top just because it looks awesome?

Every time I see an NB Miata with a hard top, I am just immediately jealous. I have been enjoying every day of top down driving with my Miata, regardless of the weather. But for some reason I am just so drawn to the look of the removable hard top on these cars. I think it looks quite good on NAs, but damn the NB looks even better with one! Thankfully the ~$1k for a nice hard top has kept me from impulse buying one. Some day though, I will certainly just have to get one.

I was lucky enough to get one with my NB. It only ever sees use during winter when I’m storing the car. I don’t have a garage.

I think every generation miata looks reaaaalllly good with a hard top (hence the new targa I bet, they saw the demand I guess)

Besides looks they make Miatas suck a lot less. Helped keep the greenhouse from fogging up in rain and made driving the car bearable in the winter for me.

It’s crazy how much they cost though. Look at it as renting a hard top for the time you own it...you will get your money back.

This would be the only Miata I’d consider, but I still wouldn’t because it still looks incredibly awkward to me.

They are gorgeous... But the going price is 1500 around Seattle. Absolutely brutal

It’s crazy how much they cost though.

The values vary quite a lot based on which model top you get. A color-matched top with defroster & head liner can bring quite a penny. Mine is an early NA top that had been painted bright red, and was a bit more reasonable money. I hit it with some matte black paint (so it roughly resembles the soft top color), and installed an aftermarket defroster kit. I do want to make an headliner at some point.

For winter driving, the hard top is a fantastic accessory to have (after snow tires of course).

Yeah, I bought my first top for $750. Wrong color but had the headliner and defroster. Second one I bought was $850 and it was bare bones, but at least it was black. Every time I think about getting another Miata one of the things that holds me up is the hassle of tracking down a hardtop in decent shape for a reasonable price.

$750 for a top with headliner and defroster is a steal. Wrong color can be addressed cheaply with paint, especially if you aren’t trying to match the factory paint. I used rattle-can matte black on mine and was pleasantly surprised with the results.

Probably the most cost effective option when shopping for a car would be to try to find one that includes a hardtop already. There’s a better chance of getting a factory color match that way too.

Yup. Problem is that each Miata I’ve bought thus far was less than 2k. So...as you can imagine, there generally isn’t a hard top included.

Ah yes, at that price point it is unlikely the seller will have a hard top to include, even with an appropriately higher price.

I bought my car from a small independent shop that primarily deals with Miatas. The owner has quite a few on the property in various states of condition-- some are just wrecks he buys to salvage drivetrains for rebuilding other cars. If you can find someone like that, they might have a couple of hard tops in stock and be willing to part with one for a fair price.
